About Me

Hello! Welcome to MJ Photographics! I’m Emily, an artist and photographer based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I have many passions in life but photography has been with me since I got my very first 35mm camera for Christmas at the age of nine! For me photographs are physical memories and I love capturing those memories for my clients and myself, whether it’s a family photo, a pet portrait, a headshot for work, or part of a personal artistic project.

With MJ Photographics I take on a wide variety of projects but mainly I specialize in headshots and portraiture. In addition to my photography work I am active actor and director in the film and theatre industries, so I have a unique perspective on performer headshots and the requirements of the industry. I really enjoy photographing people. It’s an interesting and different way to get to know someone. I know not everyone loves having their photo taken so I’m always trying to find new ways to help put my clients at ease in front of the camera.

Animals are another passion of mine, originally I wanted to be a vet and a photographer when I grew up. I’ve always had a cat or two (or more) in my life, I worked at a dog daycare in high school, and I’ve been a horseback rider for years. Whether it’s dogs, cats, horses or even wild animals I love every opportunity to photograph any creature I come across. Right now I offer dog and horse portrait sessions and adore capturing images of people interacting with the animals they love most.

I also love working with families and couples to capture important life moments and genuine images of your lives together whether that’s a family event, engagement shots or small weddings.
